Hash House A Go Go

Long time no food blog. Life, mostly school, has gotten in the way of... well, living. Where did my hobbies go?? *wail in the corner* Dramatic-ism aside, I really did have some amazing food around the country in the past... well however long it's been, and the "reviews" (more like oodles of food-porn), I'm hoping, I will be able to get to soon.

To be honest, the purposes of these "reviews" aren't really reviews most of the time, it's just a way for me to remember the delishiousnessness I've had so that I may come back in some distant future and actually remember something of it (because I really don't remember much in life, honestly, I don't understand how I get through daily living).

Let's start with one place that has been a bit... well, disappointing. Hash House A Go Go in Hillcrest, SD. In the 4 years of undergrad I spent at UCSD, I've heard about this place from a lot of people, and was told it's awesomeness. However, seeing as we're walled in the monkhood of La Jolla studiousness (yeah right), we never had a chance to go. So when the opportunity arisen when a few pharm school friends decided to go try it, we gladly took up the offer of a weekend brunch in February (really forgot if it was Saturday or Sunday, the only reason I know the date is because of my camera time-stamp).

Onward we go! So we arrived at the place around 10? Thank goodness we had a reservation because, oh dear lord the wait was going to be 2 hours otherwise. Really, who would wait 2 hours for brunch when you just got up and is hungry? Regardless, I was told that our party needed to be complete before we can be seated. Fine. So we wait and everyone arrives, another 10-15min passes before we're actually seated. Great! Now we can have some food.

We ended up ordering the Chicken & Waffles with side of scrambled eggs. It was actually quite price-y but the two of us shared the plate... which turned out to be more than enough.

The Chicken and Waffles concept is not new. If I'm not mistaken, Roscoe's in LA is famous for it, but I think this version is a lot different... in an interesting way. Let me elaborate: two huge heavily breaded chicken breasts are stacked on top of plain waffles, then drenched in syrup and all saturated with a rosemary flavor... Interesting, but not necessarily... good? It was definitely different, maybe good once in awhile but not something I could have often. I give it the novelty factor, taking relatively ordinary dishes, super-super sizing it, and then giving it a very unexpected (and very rosemary-y) spin. That is what I gather of their dishes here.

One of our friends ordered something else. I honestly don't remember what it was. That's what I get for waiting so long to blog about it.

These pictures really don't do justice on just how OBSCENELY ENORMOUS the portions were. I mean, do they really expect ANYONE to really finish a plate all by themselves?

All it all, it was very expensive, and really too much food, all with an interesting flavor. I can't say I'm really a fan. The sheer wait was also mind-boggling. I think it was the hype that did it in. I agree it's probably something worth trying once in your life, and for some this may just hit the spot, but for me, it was at a loss. Since the brunch, I've been there another time for dinner, about a few months later and ordered different dishes, it was unfortunately the same story. I didn't find the food very appealing, especially for the price. But hey, it's worth trying right?
